We live in the north of Latvia, about a two and a half hour drive north of Riga, and about a half an hours drive south of the Estonian border. Our nearest village is Burtnieki, which sits on the edge of Burtnieki Lake, about 6 kilometres (4 miles) away. Burtnieki means 'the people who read the stars', and it is supposed to be a very magical place. Folklore tells of a village sitting on the bottom of the lake, and I have spoken to locals who believe this village exists and is alive today.

wow Kim! I'm stunned .. yes it's in the middle of nowhere but what a stunning area you live in. Complete harmony with nature and no neighbours to listen to off key singing ;)
ReplyDeleteSometimes isolation is good and but in saying that at least the village isn't too far away, just to be able to get in touch with others.
it looks fantastic, and great to finally see a photo of it!
ReplyDeletei wish i were in the middle of nowhere if it looks as serene as that- lucky you!
